EDITORIAL: THE ENTHUSIASM IN HISPANIC CELEBRATIONS MUST CONTINUE IN THE ELECTIONS
Never have there been so many celebrations in Connecticut for Hispanic Heritage Month. It is evident that the near end of the pandemic has aroused a special enthusiasm in people.
The month of festivities established in 1988 runs from September 15 to October 15. In our State, this year the celebrations kicked off with the visit of Governor Lamont to the “Criollísimo Restaurant” in New Britain, precisely on September 15, to declare the beginning of the Hispanic celebrations.
Then there were celebrations of the patriotic anniversaries of the Central American countries, Mexico and Chile, and the Hartford Capitol was the scene of the raising of the flags and the recognition of their communities.
The Hartford City Council recognized several Latinos for their work in favor of the community, and the Universities and Colleges also did the same.
Another historical event happened at the Archdiocesan Celebration of Mary in the María Reina de la Paz Parish in Hartford, with the participation of the Virgins of Peru, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala, Chile, Cuba and the United States. There was a procession, mass and the festivities ended with typical dances and food from each country.
These are just a few samples of the wide variety of activities that took place throughout the State, in which authorities and members of the Latino community participated. By the way, next November 8 there are mid-term elections, in which the governorship and important positions in the state are at stake.
We ask two things, that the passion put forth by Latinos at the parties is also manifested in the voting, for all those who can vote, and that those authorities who accompanied Latinos in the celebrations, do not lose sight of them and listen to their demands in terms of work, health and migrations.
