LATINO DE ORO Award: “Whatever they are going to give me, let them give it to me in life”
As the song of the Gran Combo of Puerto Rico says “What they are going to give me /May they give it to me in life / Do not wait / After my departure”, the LATINO DE ORO Awards intend to honor in life the outstanding people of Connecticut. This September 10, 2022, is the 12th Edition of the awards. A ceremony that begun back in 2005.
There are already 120 Latinos who have received the original trophy made in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 10 categories, which include the varied activities of all those who strive to have an excellent education and carry out work for the benefit, especially of the Latin community.
The phrase at the beginning is so true that there are already five winners of the LATINO DE ORO who have passed away and who had the emotion and joy of having been awarded. María B. González (Education) in 2007; Gary Pinedo (Media) in 2007; Yvette Rivera-Dreyer (Education) in 2010; Joe Pickard (Life Achievement) in 2010 and Pedro García (Media) back in 2016.
This year 2022, in which the award ceremony returns, after a 4-year layoff, is particularly significant, because thanks to vaccines, we are coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic that took millions of lives in the world and left us with so many disorders. The LATINO DE ORO party is a sign that we Latinos who live in the US have the strength to rise up from the worst tragedies and continue to celebrate our culture and recognize the contributions of our people.
Finally, within this year’s awards, there is the Lifetime Achievement Award for Dr. Miguel Cardona who, at only 45 years of age, has developed a meteoric rise in his career from being a primary school teacher in Meriden, to reaching the highest position in the Department of Education of the United States. An absolute pride and a fine example for Latinos all over.
